Skiing in the Sierra Nevada

Ski in the Sierra Nevada mountains then swim in the Mediterranean on the same day !

Sierra Nevada - Europes southernmost ski resort -one of the very few places in the world where you can spend the morning on the ski slopes and the afternoon sunbathing on a beach !
It is around an hours drive from the apartment in Salobrena and only 30 minutes from the villa in Suspiro del Moro.

Mulhacen at 3,482 metres is Spains tallest peak in the Sierra Nevada (which means 'snowy mountains'). The village of Pradollano at 2,100 metres is reached by the highest road in Europe.
Being one of Europes highest altitude resorts means you can ski for at least 5 months of the year. On a clear day you can see across the Med to the Rif mountains in Morocco.

The ski village has a huge underground car park directly beneath the main plaza for easy parking. There are many shops, restaurants, hotels and of course ski hire and ski schools.

On the slopes over 20 lifts take you to the runs - there are 4 black, 34 red, 33 blue and 8 green and snow cannons ensure good conditions. The 1996 World Championship run is good for the advanced skier. There is also a dedicated snowboard park.

Ski Schools

There are several ski schools for beginners or intermediates, including the English language Ski Center in the village.

Other Activities

There are often other activities on offer like ice skating, snow mobile rides and even dog-sledding !
Or take a trip in the cable car for amazing scenery or just sit outside one of the many bars and restaurants to top up your tan !

There is also a good apres-ski scene.

When to go

Typically the ski season runs from the end of November through to April or May, depending on conditions. Check out the resort website (www.sierranevadaski.com - link below)for up to date details and prices.
Lift passes start at around 23 euros for the day, 137 euros for the week. Parking and ski hire is extra.

How to get there

From the apartment exit Salobrena on the N340 towards Motril then slip off on the right when you see the sign for Granada. As you near Granada follow the signs for Sierra Nevada.

The Alsina Graells buses also run to the main bus station in Granada - you can then take another bus from here to the ski resort.

From the villa simply head towards Granada on the main A44 and follow the signs for Sierra Nevada. Or, as above, take a bus from the main bus station in Granada to the ski resort.

" Hi Mark, Hi Jayne - just a brief note to thank you for an excellent stay in Suspiro del Moro.

The villa was kitted out extremely well & was more than comfortable, warm and cosy for the 6 of us in our party (we would not hesitate in bringing 8 people along next time !).

It was great to have the 2 luxurious bathrooms which helped in getting everyone up & out in the morning & up to the ski slopes in good time.

The Sierra Nevada ski resort was an easy drive of approx 35 mins, the centre of Granada only 10 mins and the coast approx 45 mins, making the villa location ideal for a 'multi-purpose' holiday.

No doubt we will be back in early 2008 !
Thanks again for a great holiday "
